MIG
Maritime Interest Group
The Maritime Interest Group of the DMA has been set up to support the interests of DMA Members in the maritime defence sector. Membership of the group is free to any DMA member and the aim of the group is to provide a focus for maritime defence activities and to offer advice on defence issues both for the home and overseas markets. The extent of such business is wide and varied, breaking down into the following sectors.
- Studies, risk, OA, simulation, safety
- Ship building and repair, main machinery
- Ship operational equipment, ie Command systems, weapons and sensors, communications
- Logistics, support management
- Ancillary equipment (eg life saving, boats, RAS etc)
- Small craft, offshore policing and protection.
Serving all these sectors effectively under a common maritime banner is a challenging task, and is approached through:
- Seminars and briefings from MOD officials
- Exhibitions
- Sea days and special customer events
- Feedback from Government and NGO information
- Individual company advice and support
In addition, there is a meeting for all MIG members approximately every 2 months and usually on board the HMS Wellington in London. At this meeting we invariably have a key MOD guest speaker who then joins in discussion, as well as covering relevant maritime issues in an informal manner.
The DMA manager for the MIG is on the following Committees, where views of members can be represented:
- Lloyds Naval Ship Rules
- EU Marine Equipment Directive
- Nautical Institute Technical Committee
- MOD Safety at Sea Forum
- MOD Ship Disposal
The following are the terms of reference of the DMA Maritime Interest Group:
- Providing advice and initiatives in support of the UK MOD maritime requirements and capabilities
- Furthering the representations and aspirations of the UK Maritime defence and public security Industry
- Providing a focal point for advice and initiatives in support of UK maritime exports
